The clients wanted a large outdoor swimming pool that could accommodate the whole family, with enough space for diving, fitness swimming and relaxation. Their brief included a diving board, a powerful swim jet and a dedicated lounging area, all incorporated into a design that would complement the property.
Measuring 14m x 5m, with a depth ranging from 1.2m to 2.75m, the bespoke swimming pool was designed to accommodate these different activities. The deeper section provides the necessary space for the diving board, while the shallower end offers an area for more relaxed swimming.
The pool interior and surrounding terrace are finished in Houghton Grey large-format porcelain. The choice of tile has a noticeable effect on the water colour, particularly where the pool transitions from the shallow end to its 2.75m depth. A bespoke Ipe hardwood diving board provides a contrasting natural finish against the grey porcelain.
One of the more unusual features is the double-turbine swim jet. The client was particularly keen to incorporate a system that would provide substantial resistance for swimming training, so two turbines were specified rather than a conventional single swim jet. We also arranged a bespoke operating programme, allowing the resistance to be varied to suit the swimmer.
The pool is heated by a large air source heat pump and includes an Aquamatic automatic fabric cover to help reduce heat loss and evaporation. White LED lighting, UV disinfection and a chlorine feeder complete the installation.
Construction began in January, which brought the usual challenges of working through winter weather. Progress was affected by the conditions until the weather improved, while access to the pool area presented a separate logistical problem.
The distance between the road and the pool location made material deliveries particularly difficult. Moving equipment and construction materials into position required additional manpower and careful planning throughout the build.
The completed pool gives the family the flexibility they were looking for, whether using the double-turbine system for swimming training, enjoying the lounging area or making use of the bespoke diving board. Its size and depth also make this a particularly distinctive project within our portfolio.
