The Cave Hotel wanted to create an indoor swimming pool and spa that reflected the distinctive character of the hotel. Rather than a conventional leisure facility, the brief called for an atmospheric space where guests could swim, relax and enjoy a more intimate spa experience.
The pool was finished in dark porcelain tiles, chosen to complement the hotel’s interiors and create a deeper, more dramatic water colour. Lighting was an important part of the design, with subtle illumination used to highlight the pool and surrounding features without losing the atmosphere of the room.
Two swim jets were incorporated into the pool, allowing two guests to swim against a current at the same time. This added a fitness element to the facility, while an oversized entry step provides easy access and an area where guests can sit and relax in the water.
One of the more unusual features is a fire-effect window, which introduces the appearance of moving flames alongside the swimming pool. The contrast between the fire effects and dark water adds to the distinctive character of the space.
Alongside the pool, we installed a 12-person Jacuzzi with an Opti-myst fireplace, continuing the fire-and-water theme throughout the leisure area.
The room has two quite different atmospheres depending on the time of day. Large windows allow natural light into the space, making the pool area feel open and connected to the outdoors. In the evening, the darker finishes, subtle lighting and flame effects create a more enclosed, cave-like setting.
The completed facility gives hotel guests a choice between swimming, using the swim jets for exercise or relaxing in the Jacuzzi. Its distinctive design also makes the pool and spa an important part of the overall Cave Hotel experience, rather than simply an additional hotel amenity.
