Originally constructed in the early 1900s, this plunge pool forms part of a Grade II* listed property. Although the original structure had deteriorated over time, the homeowners were keen to preserve its character rather than replace it with an entirely different design.
XL Pools was appointed to demolish and reconstruct the plunge pool, retaining its original proportions and architectural features while introducing modern construction methods and equipment.
Before work began, we carried out a detailed survey of the existing structure to establish which elements needed to be replicated. Of particular importance was the bespoke handcrafted waterfall, a defining feature of the original design that the clients wanted to retain.
Once the survey was complete, the ageing pool was carefully demolished and construction began on its replacement. The challenge was to recreate the appearance of the original plunge pool while addressing the limitations of a structure built more than a century ago.
We incorporated improved insulation, modern filtration and a heating system, allowing the pool to be maintained more easily and heated when required. More durable construction materials were also used, with careful consideration given to the property’s listed status and historic character.
The interior was finished in Italian Carrara marble tiles, chosen for their natural veining and suitability for the traditional setting. The waterfall was incorporated into the reconstructed design, preserving one of the original pool’s most recognisable features.
The completed plunge pool now serves much the same purpose as it did over a century ago, but with the benefits of modern equipment and construction. The homeowners can enjoy a refreshing dip during warmer weather or heat the water when their nieces and nephews visit.
Rather than losing an unusual part of the property’s history, the clients have been able to retain its original character while making the pool practical for everyday family use.
