Installing a swimming pool within the grounds of a Grade I listed 12th-century monastery required a different approach to a typical residential project. The historic buildings had been converted into private homes, and any new addition needed to respect the character of the original architecture and comply with the planning consent.
The clients wanted an outdoor swimming pool that would sit naturally within the grounds, rather than introduce a design that felt out of place against the historic stonework.
We constructed a bespoke reinforced concrete swimming pool, allowing the design and finishes to be tailored to the setting.
The pool interior was finished in Silver Shine Mauritian Slate, selected for its natural tones and understated appearance. Aged York stone copings were used around the pool edge to complement the surrounding buildings, while grass surrounds helped soften the transition into the wider grounds.
Although the materials were chosen to reflect the property’s history, the pool incorporates modern equipment for everyday use.
A solar polycarbonate slatted Aqua Top cover was installed to help retain heat and reduce evaporation. Water treatment is provided by a Hydroxinator system combined with UV disinfection, reducing the need for manual chemical management.
The main consideration throughout the project was ensuring that the installation remained sympathetic to its surroundings. Rather than relying on elaborate detailing, the design uses a restrained combination of stone, slate and landscaping.
The completed swimming pool provides the homeowners with a modern leisure facility while preserving the character of this unusual historic setting. Its natural finishes and simple design allow it to sit comfortably alongside buildings that have stood for centuries.
