For Mr and Mrs Williams, creating an indoor swimming pool was about much more than having somewhere to swim. Their son uses a wheelchair, and they wanted a private, accessible space where he could enjoy being in the water with the support of his family.
The design was developed around their son’s individual requirements, with particular attention given to the pool’s depth and accessibility.
The water depth was carefully chosen to allow his parents to stand comfortably while supporting him in the pool. A dedicated pool hoist was also incorporated, providing a practical way to assist him into and out of the water without relying on conventional steps.
The bespoke hydrotherapy pool was finished with an on-site fitted liner in Beige Mosaic, creating a light, welcoming interior. White LED underwater lighting was installed, alongside a bubble cover to help retain heat and reduce evaporation when the pool is not in use.
Water treatment is provided by a chlorine feeder and UV disinfection system, while a Heatstar environmental control system manages humidity and helps maintain comfortable conditions within the indoor pool room.
Unlike a conventional residential swimming pool, the priority throughout this project was ensuring the facilities worked for the family’s particular needs.
The completed pool provides a familiar, private environment where the parents can support their son in the water and enjoy time together as a family.
It’s a project that illustrates how the design of a swimming pool can be adapted to make swimming more accessible, with practical considerations shaping everything from the water depth to the way the pool is entered and exited.
