When we were first contacted by a renowned architect regarding this project, we knew from the outset that we were about to embark on something truly special. The architect presented a stunning and highly unique design—one that paid homage to a previous build in Belgium. Its striking proportions, measuring an impressive 20m x 3m, immediately set it apart. It wasn’t just a pool; it was a feature, a statement, and a test of craftsmanship.
From day one, the design demanded innovation. Our challenge was to honour the architectural vision while ensuring the build complied with SPATA regulations. It took many collaborative meetings, technical evaluations, and design iterations to strike the perfect balance. What emerged was a pool design that upheld all safety and performance standards—without compromising a single element of the bespoke aesthetic.
The build journey, however, was not without its tests. Beginning in winter, and with tight deadlines in place, conditions were harsh. The excavation was subcontracted, and although the dig was completed to specification, persistent rain meant we had to adjust the excavation to include sloped sides. These changes led to continuous concaving, which significantly impacted our schedule. Yet, with resilience and proactive communication among all parties, we found ways to push through and keep progress moving.
The design brief was to create a sleek, minimalistic focal point—subtle and elegant—that would sit harmoniously within the larger garden space. We worked closely with the client, exploring various finishes including mosaics, large-format tiles, and a spectrum of colours. In the end, the client selected Heritage Carbon, a large-format tile with a concrete aesthetic. This choice delivered a seamless, uninterrupted surface that blends effortlessly with the natural tones of the surrounding landscape, while also giving the water a stunning turquoise shimmer that feels organic and inviting.
Entry into the pool is elegantly discreet, with a single one-sided step designed to avoid any intrusion into the main lap-swimming space. Surrounding the pool, we installed exquisite Basalto Italiano basalt copings—each nearly a metre long and hand-cut to precise tolerances. Their natural dark tones and soft surface textures echo the surrounding stonework and garden design, helping the pool to feel like a natural extension of the landscape rather than a separate entity. These copings not only elevate the look but also provide a sophisticated and functional edge that frames the water beautifully.
This pool is a showcase of precision, design harmony, and perseverance. Spanning almost a full year from conception to completion, the project required dedication at every level. Our client was incredibly understanding and appreciative of the time and attention to detail a build of this calibre demands. The result is a pool that is not only architecturally striking but also built to the highest standards of quality, functionality, and beauty.
It’s a project we are immensely proud of—and one that reaffirms the importance of collaboration, patience, and craftsmanship when bringing a bold vision to life.
