Swimming Pool Construction in the UK

Designing and building a pool is a big decision, but with the right partner, it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. At XL Pools, we bring decades of experience, national award recognition, and a reputation for building pools that last.

Whether you’re envisioning a compact one-piece pool or a custom-built concrete installation, our construction service is built on one core promise: quality at every step.

This page walks you through how our pool construction process works, what materials we offer, and why UK homeowners trust XL Pools to handle every detail, from first sketch to first swim.

Why Construction Quality is Everything

When it comes to swimming pools, how the pool is built affects everything, from day-to-day use to long-term cost. A well-constructed pool won’t just look good on day one. It will be structurally sound, efficient to run, easy to maintain, and a joy to use for years to come.

This is where our team excels. We combine technical skill with transparent project management to deliver reliable construction on time, within budget, and to an exceptionally high standard.

We’re not just installers, we’re builders, engineers, and problem-solvers. We’re also SPATA Gold Award winners, which means our work has been independently recognised for its excellence.

Our Construction Process: From Vision to Completion

We’ve built swimming pools in city gardens, countryside retreats, commercial spaces and private homes across the UK. No matter the setting, our process follows a clear, proven path designed to keep projects moving smoothly.

It all begins with an initial conversation. We listen carefully to what you’re looking for, the size, shape, purpose, and feel of your dream pool, and guide you through practical decisions such as access, heating, maintenance, and budget. From there, we progress through the following stages.

Consultation and Site Survey

After your enquiry, we’ll visit your site (or review plans remotely) to assess the available space, access conditions, and technical requirements. This stage is crucial, it allows us to advise on the right construction method, suitable designs, and any planning permission considerations that might apply.

Design and Specification

Next, we produce detailed plans tailored to your needs. Whether you choose a pre-engineered one-piece pool or a custom concrete design, we’ll help you visualise the final layout.

This stage includes drawings, equipment selections, heating and filtration planning, and materials for your surrounds such as paving, coping stones, or decking. Everything is documented in a full quotation with no hidden surprises.

Groundworks and Structural Construction

Once the design is approved and scheduled, we begin excavation. Our groundworks team will prepare the base, install service ducts, and ensure the foundation is level, safe, and ready for your pool.

The construction method varies depending on the pool type, a one-piece pool is craned into position fully formed, while a concrete pool is built up on-site through steel rebar, shotcrete or poured concrete, and waterproof finishing layers.

All services, such as return inlets, drains, lighting conduits, and pipework, are integrated during this stage to ensure a clean, efficient final layout.

Filtration, Heating and Control Systems

The pool’s plant room is where filtration, heating and water treatment systems are installed. Whether we’re fitting an air-source heat pump, a saltwater chlorinator, or a traditional dosing system, our engineers configure everything for long-term performance and easy day-to-day operation.

We also install control panels, pumps, filters, lighting systems and any automation setups requested.

Finishes and Surrounds

Once the structure is complete, the pool is finished with your chosen surface, this could be a ColourGuard® composite gelcoat (in a one-piece pool), custom tiling (for concrete builds), or a reinforced vinyl liner.

We then install the surrounds, from coping stones to timber decking or porcelain paving, and ensure everything is finished to specification.

Commissioning and Handover

Finally, the system is filled, balanced and fully tested. We carry out commissioning checks on filtration, electrics, water chemistry, and heating.

Once everything’s running smoothly, we’ll hand over a full owner’s pack including care instructions, warranty documents, and a demonstration of how your system works.

What Types of Pools Do We Build?

Every site, client and project is different, so we offer a range of construction types to suit different needs. Our job is to guide you toward the right option for your space, usage and budget.

One-piece composite pools are a popular choice for homeowners who want fast installation, minimal disruption, and a premium finish. These shells are made off-site in a controlled factory, reinforced with graphene, and finished with ColourGuard® gelcoat for exceptional durability. They’re craned into place and ready to fill in a matter of days.

Concrete pools offer total design flexibility. They’re ideal for luxury indoor installations, unique shapes, or sites with complex requirements. Because they’re built from the ground up on site, they take longer to install, but the result is a fully bespoke solution.

Liner pools use pre-manufactured wall panels and a vinyl liner, making them more budget-friendly than concrete but with a bit more maintenance over the years. Liners generally need replacement every 7–10 years but are easy to clean and comfortable underfoot.

Not sure what type suits you best? We’re always happy to talk through your options and show you real-world examples from our portfolio.
