Some projects are about more than just upgrading materials or adding the latest technology, they’re about preserving something deeply personal. This refurbishment was exactly that. Originally built in 1976, the pool had been an integral part of our client’s family home for decades. It held countless memories, including many summers enjoyed by his mother. While time had taken its toll, the marbelite interior had worn away, the paving had deteriorated, and the original system lacked any filtration or safety features, however, the pool’s character and history were too important to lose.
The brief was clear: breathe new life into the pool while respecting its original design and emotional significance.
From the outset, our focus was on balancing heritage with performance. The pool’s original reinforced concrete shell and distinctive twin Roman ends were retained, preserving the symmetry and unique character that made it so special. Working closely with the client, who was involved in every decision from paving choice to filtration specification, we developed a design that was both faithful to the original and tailored for modern living.
The tired marbelite finish was removed and replaced with high-quality mosaics, giving the pool a refreshed, timeless look. The entire paving surround was recreated in line with the original style, maintaining the pool’s familiar presence within the garden.
While the structure and design stayed true to the past, the technology beneath the surface underwent a complete transformation. A new high-end filtration system — including automatic dosing and a heat pump — was installed to ensure efficient, reliable water quality. All pipework, fittings, and lighting were replaced, and the pool was fully waterproofed. A Coverseal safety cover now provides discreet protection, replacing the old, unsafe bubble cover.
The result is a pool that beautifully blends past and present. Its classic shape, proportions, and layout remain unchanged, but its functionality, efficiency, and safety are now firmly up to modern standards. The finished space feels both familiar and renewed — a place where decades of family memories can continue.
