Swimming Pool Installation Timeline in the UK: What to Expect Week by Week

Planning to install a swimming pool in the UK? Whether you’re dreaming of a sleek concrete design or a rapid-installation one-piece composite pool, understanding the timeline can save you time, stress, and surprises along the way.

At XL Pools, we handle both types, and while each installation is unique, the overall process follows a familiar rhythm.

This guide walks you through what to expect, how long each phase takes, and how the Concrete pools timeline can vary based on the type of pool you choose, site access, and even the British weather.

What Affects Your Pool Installation Timeline?

Before we break it down week by week, it’s worth understanding what shapes the timeline.

  • Pool type: One-piece composite pools are delivered pre-moulded and can be installed faster. Concrete pools, on the other hand, are built entirely on site, which takes more time.

  • Ground conditions: A flat, accessible garden with decent drainage speeds things up. If excavation reveals poor soil, rocks, or water tables, extra groundwork is needed.

  • Planning permission: Most domestic pools don’t require it, but exceptions apply (especially for listed buildings or conservation areas).

  • Weather: This is the UK, extended rain can delay groundworks or concrete curing times.

  • Add-ons and landscaping: Features like automatic covers, heating systems, decking, or custom tiling can all add to the schedule.

Let’s now explore the typical timeline based on the type of pool you choose.

Installation Timeline: One-Piece Composite Pools

One-piece pools are the fastest to install because the shell arrives fully formed and ready to lower into place. Here’s what a typical 2 – 4 week process looks like:

Week 1: Site Prep & Excavation

After your quote is confirmed, our team begins by setting out the pool footprint, marking access points, and preparing the site. Excavation follows, with earth removed and the base levelled using laser equipment. Service ducts for electrics and plumbing are installed at this stage too. If you’re having a plant room, its location will also be prepared.

Week 2: Delivery, Craning & Initial Backfill

Your pre-moulded pool shell arrives on a flatbed truck, and a crane carefully lifts it into position. The pool is checked for level, plumbing lines are connected, and water and backfill are added in balanced stages to keep pressure equalised. At this point, your pool starts to take shape fast.

Week 3: Plumbing, Electricals & System Testing

We install the filtration system, heat pump, lighting, and cover systems — everything housed in the plant room. Electrical work is carried out by qualified contractors, and once the systems are in place, we begin water balancing and testing.

Week 4: Surrounds, Handover & Aftercare

Coping stones, paving, or decking are laid around the pool edge, creating a finished look. Final testing is completed, and we walk you through pool operation, safety, and maintenance. You’re now ready to swim.

Installation Timeline: Concrete Pools

Concrete pools are entirely custom builds. They take longer, typically 8 to 12 weeks, but allow unlimited design options, custom tiling, vanishing edges, and more.

Here’s how the schedule usually unfolds:

Week 1–2: Excavation & Base Formation

The process begins with site setup, excavation, and steelwork to form the reinforced structure. A concrete base is poured and allowed to set. This is one of the most critical structural stages and must be weather-aware.

Week 3–5: Walls, Shell & Curing

Walls are built using either blockwork or sprayed/poured concrete (shotcrete/gunite). This shell must cure fully, which takes time, often up to 3 weeks, depending on weather.

Week 6–7: Waterproofing & Tiling

Once cured, the shell is waterproofed. Then we apply tiles, mosaics, or the finish of your choice. This stage adds polish and design personality, but requires patience.

Week 8–10: Plumbing, Filtration, Electrical & Plant Room

We install all mechanical systems: filtration, heating, lighting, and control panels. Everything is pressure tested and made ready for water fill.

Week 11–12: Coping, Landscaping & Commissioning

Final landscaping and surrounds go in — paving, decking, or turf. Once complete, we fill the pool, balance the water chemistry, and walk you through care and maintenance.

Which Type is Right for You?

  • Choose a composite pool if you want a fast, predictable install and a slick, ready-made finish. Ideal for family homes, smaller gardens, or those who want less disruption.

  • Choose a concrete pool if you want complete design freedom — vanishing edges, custom shapes, luxury tilework, and are happy with a longer timeline.

Not sure what’s right? We’re happy to walk you through both routes with examples and costs.

Optional Add-Ons That Can Affect Timing

Some upgrades add time but also long-term value:

  • Automatic slatted covers – neatly integrated, but may require extra days for fitting and motor setup.

  • Heating systems – like air-source heat pumps; install and commissioning usually adds 1–2 days.

  • Pool lighting – underwater LEDs are simple to include and make evening swims magical.

  • Decking or patios – the larger the surround, the more time needed post-install.

Every pool we build is customised to your preferences, so timelines flex accordingly. We’ll always give you a detailed schedule upfront.

Planning Ahead: When Should You Start?

To swim next summer, it’s best to start the planning and design process in autumn or winter.

That gives you ample time to get quotes, make decisions, and book your slot. Spring installs are popular, but demand peaks, early planning gets you in ahead of the rush.
