What to Ask Your Pool Installer Before Signing Anything

Choosing a pool installer is one of the most significant decisions you’ll make in the whole process. Get it right and you’ll have a pool that performs exactly as promised for decades. Get it wrong and you’re looking at costly remedial work, delays, and a build experience that doesn’t need to be as stressful as it becomes.

The good news is that a few well-chosen questions will tell you most of what you need to know about who you’re dealing with. Here’s what to ask before you commit to anything.

Will You Carry Out a Site Visit Before Quoting?

This is the first question to ask, and the answer will tell you a lot immediately. A credible pool installer will always visit your garden before putting a price together. Ground conditions, access for plant and equipment, drainage, the orientation of the space, proximity to the house and existing structures: all of this affects the design and the cost.

An installer who quotes without visiting is guessing. That quote may look attractive, but it won’t reflect the reality of your specific site. Surprises discovered during construction are almost always expensive.

What Does Your Quote Actually Include?

Pool installation quotes can vary enormously in what they cover. Some are comprehensive; others exclude things you’d reasonably expect to be included. Before you compare prices, make sure you understand exactly what each quote covers.

Things worth clarifying: groundworks and excavation, soil removal from site, backfilling materials, pipework runs, electrical installation and sign-off, pool coping and surround, plant room setup, commissioning, and handover. If any of these aren’t mentioned, ask why.

A cheaper quote that excludes several of these line items will often end up costing more than a higher quote that includes everything. Our guide to swimming pool construction covers what a full installation involves, which is useful context when reviewing a quote.

Are You SPATA Accredited?

SPATA, the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association, is the UK’s industry body for pool installation. Accredited members are assessed against a recognised standard for technical competence, safety, and professionalism. It’s not a guarantee of a perfect installation, but it is a meaningful filter.

An installer who isn’t SPATA accredited isn’t automatically a poor choice, but you should understand why they haven’t pursued accreditation before deciding whether that matters to you.

Who Carries Out the Electrical Installation?

All electrical work in and around a swimming pool is subject to specific regulations governing proximity to water. The installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician and signed off under Part P of the building regulations. This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation.

Ask directly who carries out the electrical installation and how it’s certified. If the answer is vague, that’s a problem. You should also confirm you’ll receive the electrical certificate at handover.

Can I See Examples of Completed Projects Similar to Mine?

Any installer worth appointing will be able to show you completed work that’s comparable to what you’re planning. Not just photographs on a website, but ideally case studies that describe the project, the challenges involved, and what the finished result delivered for the client.

Pay attention to variety. An installer who has delivered a wide range of projects across different sites, budgets, and pool types has accumulated experience that a more narrowly focused company hasn’t. XL Pools’ completed pool projects cover a range of builds across Kent and the South East, from coastal sites to indoor pools to heritage property installations.

Do You Have References I Can Speak To?

Photographs show you what a pool looks like. A conversation with a previous client tells you what the experience of working with that installer is actually like. How did they communicate during the build? How did they handle problems when they arose? Was the handover thorough?

A confident, credible installer will have no hesitation providing references. Reluctance to do so is worth noting.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong During the Build?

Every pool project has the potential for unexpected challenges. Ground conditions can surprise you. Access issues can emerge. Weather can cause delays. What matters is how an installer responds when things don’t go to plan.

Ask directly how they handle problems on site, who your point of contact is if issues arise, and what their process is for communicating delays or changes. The answer will tell you a great deal about how organised and client-focused they are.

What Does Handover Look Like?

A thorough handover is something homeowners don’t always think to ask about, but it matters considerably. At the end of your installation you should receive a full walkthrough of all the systems, documentation for every piece of equipment installed, and clear guidance on what your ongoing maintenance routine should look like.

If an installer is vague about handover, or treats it as a formality rather than an important part of their service, that’s worth taking seriously. Our seasonal pool maintenance guide covers what good ongoing maintenance looks like, and it’s worth reading before your handover so you know what questions to ask.

What Warranty or Aftercare Do You Offer?

Understand what happens after the pool is installed. What does the warranty on the shell cover? Who is responsible if a mechanical system fails in the first year? Is there an aftercare or maintenance service available?

A company that stands behind its work will be clear and confident about its warranty and aftercare offer. One that is vague or reluctant to commit should prompt further questions.

Why Does All of This Matter?

Because the cheapest quote and the best installer are rarely the same thing. A pool installation is a long-term investment in your home, and the quality of the installation determines how well it performs for the next twenty to thirty years. Cutting corners at the appointment stage costs significantly more to correct later.
